A rec! A rec! [02 Dec 2008|09:55am]

[ mood | enthralled ]

You MUST drop everything--yes, YOU MUST--right now.. NOW! and go to see the gorgeous art I received from some incredibly talented Sexy Elf at the [info]bestmates_xmas fest. It's Harry & Ron, but nothing that you can't pull up on your computer at work. The colours, the whimsy and sweetness, Harry awestruck by his best mate invading his personal space, the red-tipped noses--oh, it's just gorgeous and you MUST go oooh! and ahhh! and leave feedback for the artist.

Happy Christmas to ME!!

BloMo30: On Animation.... [30 Nov 2008|11:58pm]

lore
[ mood | numb ]
[ music | wrrrrrr ]

[info]purplefluffycat asked "What are your favourite animated films/shorts/series/artists/styles, and why do they appeal?"

Which is probably too big a topic to leave for the last day, but let's see what I can do...

Films: Rock and Rule, The Little Mermaid, Toy Story, Anastasia, Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, The Iron Giant, Wallace and Gromit: Attack of the Were-Rabbit, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and lately, Superman: Doomsday.

Shorts: Classic Bugs Bunny ranks at the top of the list. After that, there's Felix the Cat, Wallace and Gromit, and a host of others.

Series: DARIA, Jem, BTAS, The Tick, Kimagure Orange Road, Gravitation, the D&D series, Danger Mouse, Powerpuff Girls, etc.

Styles: I like clean lines and smooth movement, which is why you won't find much in the way of Hannah-Barbara here. I prefer humans over animals, but obviously, there are some exceptions.

As for why Animation appeals...Doesn't it speak to the child in all of us? No matter how adult the story may be, animation draws us in and puts us in a younger frame of mind. Also, animation can be beautiful in a way Real Life can never be. Animation means all things are still possible within the story.

Well, the best friends had News. Good news! Pretty news! Sparkly vampire news! Or maybe just the sparkly....

No one got knifed during our Thanksgiving. How about yours? However, we did see two paramedic vehicles at two different houses on our hour-long drive. You just know knives were involved there!

Now we're settled in for the night and the SO is watching an AFI special, all of which are designed to piss people off.

Anyway! Off to labor! *HUGS ALL*

BloMo 27: Accepting, giving, Pringles and knives...not in that order.... [27 Nov 2008|05:25am]

Happy National "Gee, I hope nothing bad happens with a knife" Day!

~_^

I have a lot in my life to be thankful for; more than I have to regret. As sarcastic and slyly evil as I can be about the holidays, there is a certain peace in being with the family. I know my family doesn't understand me when it comes to this, though. We argue, piss, moan, snark and throw Pringles, but that doesn't mean I don't love them. Sometimes, they lose sight of me that way and I have to reassure them, even as it baffles me. They're my family. I love them. Just because it can be an adventure putting a bunch of Italian women and their occasionally temperamental but normally passive significant others in a room together doesn't mean the resulting melee ends in me not loving them. Besides, they usually start it! *snicker*

I didn't really get to any food-giving this year, so I made sure to put a big hunk of cash in a food-collection site jar, and I'll give actual food for Christmas. I've tried much harder to spread our giving out this year, so I'm not feeling the usual guilt that comes with the end of the year and realising I haven't donated as much as I'd planned. If you see this, if you're having that twinge, remember, giving isn't as hard as it used to be, what with the writing of the checks and the stamps and all. Most charities have online sites and take PayPal or credit card donations, and you get an instant, easily printed receipt.

So, again, if you're feeling it, take a moment to look a site up and give them a little somethin'-somethin'. It will banish that narsty twinge and put you ahead of the giving game. Plus, you know, good thing to do for others and your heart and all that.

BloMo26: Further proof of the vile creator OTP... [26 Nov 2008|08:18pm]

Remember this post? Maybe you thought to yourself, "huh, Rowling and Lucas would make a pretty ironic couple."

But now there's further proof that they were MFEO: Han Solo was married to a wookie.

Granted, Lucas said this in 1978, but it was after Star Wars had become a phenomenon and something he kept from canon to this day. In other words, Lucas was mucking with his canon almost from year 1, because Han never mentioned a tall, hairy wife in the Brian Daley series!

I can just see the headlines. "Dumbledore may be Gay, but at least he wasn't married to a Wookie!"

*headdesk*

And the Rowling/Lucas OTP marches on....

The almost completely unspoilery eval of my Twilight read. [25 Nov 2008|05:33am]

[ mood | accomplished ]
[ music | L. A. Meyer, guys. Right next to S.M. onna bookshelf. Much better. ]

I read Twilight. Best quote I've heard about it was from dolorous_ett, who said, "It's neither as good as I hoped, nor as bad as I hoped." That's pretty much my take. I did read the whole thing, didn't hate it. Did skim the last eighty or so pages--about the time the story decided it needed more excitement. Didn't agree with that, no. It was doing better as a character piece, and I had liked the romantic development better, which--fair is fair--was not badly done. There was genuine showing, rather than telling, in a good percentage of the romance. And I don't think Bella's a Mary Sue. Mary Sues in my opinion radiate inescapable "I'm so special" self-knowledge, and Bella instead focuses on her shortcomings, which no Mary Sue worth her sparkly unicorn familiar would do. Edward is even appealing, and as for the claims of purple prose, well, maybe my exposure to genuine badfic (Summary Executions, Babb Chronicles, and ff.net, you still have no peer in entertainment) has made me grateful for any author able to string a credible sentence together, but I didn't think it was too terribly much. Not worth all the hype, nah. But not horrible.

Though when an immortal impossibly gorgeous vampire does decide I should become his lifemate, I hope it's for a deeper reason than that he's keyed on the way I smell. Meh.

Work day 1 of 2 [24 Nov 2008|02:06pm]

[ mood | weird ]

Oh, that's not good.... )

It was a busy weekend in that I was pulled all over the place.
** Got one article written (YAY!) and made more progress on my [info]bestmates_xmas story which is taking a turn I hadn't planned on but will acquiesce to for the sake of plot development and logic (semi-YAY).
**Watched part of the LSU-Ole Miss game which I turned off when it was apparent LSU was going down in flames. The season is a complete and total loss. But hey, you can't win football games without a good quarterback, and the Tigers were playing with the 4th stringer who isn't very good--and a front line that was limper than a spent dick. *spits in disgust* There's always next year.
**Made significant headway on Grandma's shawl.
**HeadBoy made a very good gumbo which is now all gone.
**Went to church, even though Boy1 made us extremely late because he wouldn't get the hell out of bed. At 10:56 he had the gaul to ask me what was for breakfast. "That time has come and gone, my friend. Go hungry."
**Worked three hours in the archives last night. I'm working an additional 2.5 hours tonight. I need to learn to say, "Too bad. You should've started doing research on a paper you've known you had to write since last spring."
**Mounted two old Harry/Ron stories up on The Quidditch Pitch, including what I believe is the very first Harry/Ron story I ever wrote. Wow. Brings back a lot of memories.
**Made Boy2 scrub the tub. You'd think they could see the scum and mold growing, but noooo. He actually said, "It's clean enough." GAH! After he finished it was all sparkly white again. Good thing, because the handle on the water control for our shower broke, and refused to work again, so I had to use that shower. Our shower now has a shiny new fixture, courtesy of Lowes, 2 near flooded basements, and 4 hours of cursing from HeadBoy.

We finally earned enough points from our local supermarket to get a free turkey. YAY! I'm almost finished the shopping for turkey day meal. As a side note, I received from one of my nutrition magazines, a menu for a totally raw and vegan Thanksgiving dinner. Yeeeeah. Thanks, but hell no thanks. Thanksgiving is all about turkey and stuffing and sweet potato casserole and green beans and pumpkin pie with loads of real whipped cream. I'll worry about going raw and vegan on Friday.

That is, if my brain decides to work.

BloMo22: Not quite a Quantum.... [22 Nov 2008|11:46pm]

lore

Huh, well. Quantum of Solace was a different kind of James Bond film. I can't say I hated it, but I can't say I liked it either.

The story flowed in such a way that I kept waiting for it to actually begin. And we were halfway through the climax when I realised it actually was the climax, which is pretty damn sad. And while I applaud the writers' efforts in making the Bond Girl this time around have a good chunk of plot, intelligence and capability, Bond Girl felt completely wedged into the story just to get a "movie-long" woman in there. Ultimately, we could have lifted her right out of the story and it still would have ended up where it did. Also, while I love Judi Dench as M and want to see more of her all the time, there were a few scenes wasted on her with other talking heads, and I think the writers wasted the Big Plot Point with her that came at the very beginning. She should have been focused on the BPP, but instead, she spent her time trying to rein in Bond, which we all know isn't going to happen, as then there would be no movie.

All that said, this was clearly a transitional film for the Craig era, with new uber-baddies and and an ongoing subplot that could prove intriguing or get dropped like a hot potato. This film didn't drive me away from the franchise, but it was disappointing compared to expectations.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to [info]zoanthropic!!! Russ, I hope you have a terrific day!

*~*

We were up late last night watching "The Spiderwick Chronicles" with Boy2 (who was more enthralled with a computer games, and made me kinda mad because he said he wanted to watch it and we ordered it for him from OnDemand). Boy1 went to IHOP with the band after the game last night (can you say 'frozen brass section?') so we had to wait up to go fetch him which meant we slept late this morning.

Except Boy1 had to be back at school at 9:00 to get ready for the Christmas parade (yeah...that's another rant) because he's equipment manager. Oy vey. I was up, but just barely when this fact crashed home to us. So I pulled on the clothes off the floor, grabbed a half cup of coffee and we were out the door. I'm at school for academic Saturday; it's now 9:38. I haven't been up an hour. My body is protesting. I'm too old for this crap.

*~*

HeadBoy made a chicken/sausage gumbo yesterday, as is his tradition when he has a snow day. We had it for dinner last night, and it was delicious. Wish y'all could've come over.

*~*

Making headway on Grandma's shawl. It has to be 71 inches (I mean, 71? Who came up with that?!), and I'm around 36...I think. I need more yarn. I have been perfecting my earring making skills, and it's getting better. I sat down the other night and made 4 gorgeous pairs of earrings for gifts. My crafty soul is very happy.

Making headway on all my writing projects. The journal essay is nearly finished; I'm not leaving work today until it's finished.

So, with that declaration, off I go.
